Easy ways to make Kassler chops in South Africa

Kasler Chops can be served in different ways and it’s an enjoyable meal.

Here are recipes and easy ways to make it:

Kassler chops with apple


  • 6 Kassler Chops (preferably smoked pork)
  • 125 ml/ half a cup of white wine
  • 125ml/ half a cup of natural apple juice
  • 2 onions
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 3 large green apples
  • Pepper and salt
  • Oil


  • Slice the onions and the garlic cloves. Saute the sliced pieces in a pan until they are soft and golden brown. Remove it from the pan and set aside.
  • Place then pan back on the fire and put the pork chops in, ensuring that they are browned on both sides. This should take about 4 minutes per side of the chops.
  • Season the meat with freshly ground black pepper and salt.
  • Once cooked, place the sauteed onions and garlic back into the pan. Pour half of the apple juice as well as the wine into the pan.
  • Cover the saucepan, reduce the heat, and bring it to a simmer and let it cook for about 20 minutes until the Kassler chops are nearly done. Ensure you turn them around while they cook.
  • At this point, the chops should not be ready yet. Add the remaining wine and apple juice as well as the sliced apple pieces. Let it simmer until the apple slices are soft and the meat becomes tender.

Kassler Chops with Ginger & Honey Glaze


  • Kassler chops
  • honey
  • soy sauce
  • fresh ginger – peel and grate finely
  • green beans – trim off ends and cut in half
  • sesame oil
  • cabbage – slice finely
  • courgettes – trim off ends and slice finely (3mm)
  • olive oil, salt and pepper (from your pantry)


  • Preheat the oven grill. Place the oven rack one setting higher than the middle of the oven.
  • Place the chops in a roasting pan or large casserole dish (they must not overlap). Mix the honey, ginger and soy in a bowl and whisk with a fork to combine. Pour mixture over the Kassler chops and turn chops to coat in the sauce.
  • Grill chops for 20 minutes, turning and basting with the sauce every 3 to 4 minutes. When done, remove chops and set aside to rest.
  • Prepare the beans, cabbage and courgettes as indicated above.
  • Heat a glug of olive oil and the sesame oil in a large saucepan on medium to high heat. Add the green beans, cabbage and courgettes and stir fry (stir frequently) until they are just tender, but still a little crunchy, about 5 or 6 minutes. Season well with salt and freshly ground pepper.
  • To serve, pile the stir fried veggies onto the plates and top with a Kassler chop. Drizzle over any remaining pan juices from the chops.

Sticky smoked pork chops with spiced potatoes 


  • 4 Kassler chops A handful of green beans’
  • 600g of potatoes
  • 200ml/ 1 cup of chicken stock
  • 5 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 onions
  • 2 tablespoons of wholegrain mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sweet and smoked paprika
  • 4 tablespoons of chutney
  • 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning

Method for the potatoes

  • Peel, cut in cubes or wedges, and boil the potatoes in salty water until they are ready.
  • Heat the oven to 200°C. Get an oven tray and place the potatoes randomly on it. Sprinkle some oil on it and then pour the paprika and the Italian seasoning over it.
  • Slightly crush the potatoes and mix them up then let them roast in the oven for about 10-12 minutes.

Method for the Kassler chops

  • As you wait for the potatoes to get ready, place oil in a pan and fry the chops in it for about four minutes until they are golden brown on each side.
  • Cut up the onions into fine slices, and once the pork chops are off the fire, add the onions and saute them. To the cooked onions, add the four tablespoons of chutney, the two tablespoons of mustard, and chicken stock.
  • Place the pork back into the pan and let them simmer for 5 minutes. At the time of removal, the sauce should have thickened, and the pork chops should be ready.

Kassler chops with a sweet and spicy glaze

Ingredients for the meat

  • 4 Kassler Chops
  • 40 grams of ginger
  • 4 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of honey

For the greens

  • 100 grams of green beans
  • 1/2 cabbage
  • 4 courgettes
  • 2 teaspoons of sesame oil
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method of preparation for the meat

  • The first thing is to preheat the oven grill to the standard heating temperature of about 180°C.
  • Take the honey and mix it with the ginger, add the soy sauce, and stir the mix.
  • Place the chops on a large oven dish or a glass dish, ensuring that they are not touching each other. Pour the mixed sauce on top of the pork. Turn them around and ensure they are well coated in the sauce.
  • Grill the chops for 20 minutes.
